Condition

This early print, on somewhat stiff double-weight paper with a noticeably shiny surface, is in generally excellent condition. It has very thin left and right margins, measuring no wider than 1/4-inch. There is a tiny deposit of indeterminate nature in the upper left quadrant, on one of the sitters' legs. In raking light, the following are visible upon close examination: scattered deposits of original retouching, and a few barely discernible linear scratches that do not appear to break the emulsion. There is a small area of soiling in the lower margin, and the pigment from the annotation has shifted slightly. The margin corners are gently bumped. The reverse of the print is slightly age-darkened at the periphery, and there is some soiling in the upper left corner. 'GW.2.840.Y' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. There is a Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, label on the reverse of the frame. We believe this to be an early print based on the appearance of the gelatin silver paper, the narrowness of two of the margins, and the photographer's annotations in red marker in the margin.
