Description

  • Helmut Newton
  • Woman Examining Man, U. S. Vogue, St.Tropez
  • Gelatin silver print
signed, dated, and annotated in ink and with the photographer's 'Paris' copyright stamp on the reverse, framed, 1975, printed in 1981 (Pantheon, pl. 6; Best of Helmut Newton, pl. 12; Helmut Newton: Work, p. 123)

Condition

This large print, on double-weight paper, is in generally very good condition. It has a very glossy surface, and is possibly ferrotyped. A small horizontal scratch at the upper center appears to have been been expertly retouched. A few scattered deposits, possibly retouching, are visible only under raking light. Faint foxing is visible in the upper right margin. There are a few areas along the margin edges where the emulsion is curling slightly and is faintly yellowed. Along the lower margin edge there is faint graphite transference from the framer's pencil markings on the window mat. On the reverse, '1518/7' and 'I0003245' are written in an unidentified hand in pencil and the following are written in ink: 'Saint-Tropez, 1975,' 'From American Vogue, May 1975,' 'Oct. 1981,' and 'Marc P.' (Marc Picot, the printer). There are a few, very subtle areas of soiling on the reverse.
