Catalogue Note

Nobuyoshi Araki, the controversial Japanese photographer who has been involved in attempted censorship for his prolific photographs, demonstrates in his work a passion for vivacious colours and black and white photography.  Inspired by both ancient and modern Japanese traditions, in Yakusa this is evoked through the masochism evident with the male model’s tattoos overpowering his back against the intimately erotic posing of the female model. It is homage to his fascination with the Japanese art of Shunga. These erotic, yet humorous works did not just cease to inspire Araki but Toulouse-Lautrec, Rodin and Picasso. Shunga aimed to celebrate sexual pleasure through its detail, colour and prints, which can be said true for Araki’s works.
