Condition

Original canvas. The canvas undulates slightly, but otherwise appears sound. There are some slight stretcher lines apparent in the lower right corner. There is a small loss just to the right of the center of the lower horizontal edge, and a further small loss to the roof of the building on the left. There is a push to the canvas in the upper left quadrant. There are some fine, isolated lines of craquelure in places, most apparent to the left of the chimneys, where there are one or two very small flecks of associated loss. There is some light surface dirt in places. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some areas of fluorescence, but these are thought to be in keeping with the artist's materials. The work is presented in a painted wooden frame. Catalogue Note

'It was a landscape full of drama and pathos, very much after my own heart. At that time there were thousands of bottle kilns, stuffed with saggers full of pottery and pouring their black smoke into the air.' (Julian Trevelyan, from an unpublished memoir, circa 1984, quoted in The Imaginative Impulse: Julian Trevelyan 1910-800, (exh. cat.) Bohun Gallery, Henley-on-Thames, 1999, p.48)
