Catalogue Note
Lorsque, le 30 mars 1867, après des pourparlers qui avaient débuté en 1859, le secrétaire d'état américain William H. Seward, acquit auprès de la Russie pour 7,2 M $, le territoire de l'Alaska pour l'incorporer aux Etats-Unis, la ferveur des artistes américains s'embrasa et il se créa une véritable Alaskamania, ceci malgré un certain nombre d'opposants à ce projet qui le dénommèrent Seward Folly. L'Alaska devint officiellement part des Etats-Unis le 18 octobre 1867 mais ne devint un état que le 3 janvier 1959. La polémique Seward Folly s'éteint assez rapidement au moment où des gisements d'or furent découverts en 1896 dans le Yukon.
