Literature

Probably F. Petrucci, Bernini pittore, dal disegno al 'maraviglioso composto', Rome 2006, p. 403, cat. no. 14, reproduced (as possibly Genoese School, 17th century).

Condition

The canvas has been lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is even but discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a 1 x 1 cm. circular patch of retouching just below the sitter's mouth, and a 2 x 3 cm. area of restoration in his cuff and hand. There are very minor, scattered spot retouchings in the sitter's forehead and in the background, but otherwise very little intervention. In overall good condition.
