Catalogue Note

Paolo Gerolamo Piola was the son of Domenico Piola, with whom he and his brothers worked in a workshop cooperative, the “Casa Piola”. Like his father, Paolo Gerolamo was among the most important artists active in Genoa in the 17th Century and he participated in numerous commissions to decorate the city’s churches and palaces.
The present work, in which the artist portrays Diana, goddess of the hunt, is executed in the artist’s characteristic pen and brown ink and wash, heightened with white, and is stylistically comparable to another work, The Baptism of Christ, sold in these rooms on January 23, 2008, lot 157.
