Description

  • Saint John the Evangelist
  • gilt and polychromed poplar
  • Spanish, probably Valladolid, 14th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are a few losses, including to both hands, probably due to past worming. There is some further evidence of past worming, notably to the front of the terrasse, the proper right shoulder, and the back. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, in particular open splits to the terrasse at the front, and running down the back. There are several losses to the polychromy, notably to the head, the chest, the bird, the book, and the terrasse, as well as at the high points. There is some flaking to the remaining polychromy, particularly in the face. There is a metal bracket at the bottom on the reverse.
