Description

  • Friedrich Nerly
  • Venice, a view of the Grand Canal with the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti and Santa Maria della Salute
  • signed and inscribed on the canvas and the stretcher: F. Nerly / Palazzo Pisani
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

The canvas is unlined with no major damages or restoration visible to the naked eye. On the reverse there are two patches supporting two old but well restored damages, visible now only in raking light - the first is around and below the sun, the second is very small and is at the base of the mast of the boat moored at the right. There is a small scratch in the top right corner, and a 1 cm painted strip along the bottom margin in a cream colour, it is unclear as to whether this is contemporary to the painting or not, although it seems unlikely. Inspeciton under UV light reveals some minor scattered retouchings and confirms the old damage to the right and below the sun. In fair overall condition. Offered in a simple carved gilt wood frame with a few losses.

Catalogue Note

This moonlit painting depicts the view looking down the Grand Canal from the Campo della Carità, east towards Santa Maria della Salute and the Punta della Dogana. On the left is the impressive Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti, followed by Palazzi Barbaro, Benzon Foscolo, Pisani and Succi, which are echoed by other palaces on the opposite side.
