Condition

The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening to the floorboards in the foreground and the curtain, as well as several areas of retouching: above the girl's head, and to her right in a patch measuring approx. 2 by 3 cm.; two vertical lines running down from the upper margin, each measuring approx. 15 by 1 cm., above and left of the portrait; and two areas, one to the right of the window, the other upper right, each measuring approx. 2 by 4 cm. There is also some more recent spot retouching lower right, and to a small vertical scratch, approx. 5 cm. long, on the left side of the portrait. There is some minor strengthening to the darks of the costume in the portrait, and to the clothes of the maid and the girl. Notwithstanding this restoration, the painting is in overall good condition, without need for further intervention.
