Description

  • Follower of Juan Van der Hamen y Leon
  • Still life of roses in a parcel gilt vase, figs on a pewter dish and two baskets of peaches, plums and pears on a stone ledge with a brace of lapwing
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old and effective relining - the paint surface is stable with a discoloured varnish. The panting has some surface dirt and accretions, and some minor wear throughout, particularly in the vase at the left and in one of the roses it holds, and some minor surface scuffs and scratches, however there are no major damages visible. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals that the varnish has been cleaned off in the main areas of the composition and is as a result very uneven. There some scattered small restorations and retouchings visible along the margins particularly, and in the stone ledge - but most of the fruit, flowers and game remain relatively untouched. In fair overall condition. Offered in a simple wooden frame with a few losses and one malaligned corner.
