Catalogue Note

The arch pictured here in the centre of the composition is based on that beneath the calidarium in the Baths of Caracalla, Rome. Pozzoserrato presumably studied the ruin on his only visit to Rome in 1581, before he settled in Treviso. The artist employed the same arch in reverse in two drawings (Hermitage, St. Petersburg), used for a series of prints based on Aesop's Fables.1

We are grateful to Professor Bernard Aikema for endorsing the attribution to Il Pozzoserrato on the basis of a digital image.
