Description

  • Dutch or English School, early 18th century
  • Still life of shrimps in a porcelain dish, oysters, a peeled lemon, a wine glass, and a barrel and flask, all upon a stone ledge
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Provenance

Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Gentleman'), London, Christie's, 16 December 1988, lot 128 (as Philips Angel);
With Kunstandel P. de Boer b.v., Amsterdam, by 1995, from whom acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has been lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching throughout the background, which shows some evidence of wear, largely to reduce the appearance of craquelure. There is also retouching in the centre of the barrel, and scattered through the foreground in the table. There is some repaint in the yellow of the lemon and its peel, retouching to disguise the craquelure in the oysters, and the stem of the glass and some of the prawns have been strengthened slightly. In overall fair condition.

Catalogue Note

A second still life, of similar dimensions and likely by the same hand, although on copper, is recorded at Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis as having been with Gerbr. Douwes, Amsterdam and London, in 1982.1 This painting was also previously thought to be by Philips Angel, but is now believed by Fred G. Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, to be by an anonymous Dutch or English hand and executed between 1680–1730.
