Condition

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is not too discoloured. There are areas of discoloured retouching int he flesh tones of the figures throughout their necks, shoulders, chests and some of their arms, as well as to her forehead and nose, and in his right cheek. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these areas of restoration, as well as another, more recent campaign, which includes retouching to his right eye and to small areas along the upper, right and lower margins. The dark tones of her hair have also been strengthened somewhat. In overall moderate condition.

This is a variation of Albani's original in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin (inv. no. 498), in which the focus narrows to a half-length representation of the protagonists.
