Edward Elgar: Memories of a Variation, by Mrs. Richard Powell, first edition, 8vo, Oxford: 1937, some facsimiles and photographs loose, the author's book-label ("D.M.P. 1937"); 

Elgar's autograph note recording that he "wrote to Hill offering to purchase Gagliano", with two lines in Elgar's "Dorabella Cipher", on a slip of paper (c.5.5 x 7cm), with traces of mounting to verso; the photographic portraits captioned by Dora in blue ink: "Dorabella 1902", "C.A.E. wearing a Bavarian Wettermantel  1900?" [ie Elgar's wife Alice],"Isabel Fitton 'Ysobel 1903'", "Winifred Norbury 'W.N' [1903]", "R.P.A[rnold] 1897", "B.G.N[evison]"), "H.D. Catalogue Note

Dora Mary Penny (1874-1964) appears as "Dorabella" in Variation X of the Enigma Variations.  Elgar acquired his Gagliano violin from the dealers Hill's in 1891 and sold it back to them in 1912.
