Elgar's autograph note recording that he "wrote to Hill offering to purchase Gagliano", with two lines in Elgar's "Dorabella Cipher", on a slip of paper (c.5.5 x 7cm), with traces of mounting to verso; the photographic portraits captioned by Dora in blue ink: "Dorabella 1902", "C.A.E. wearing a Bavarian Wettermantel 1900?" Catalogue Note
Dora Mary Penny (1874-1964) appears as "Dorabella" in Variation X of the Enigma Variations. Elgar acquired his Gagliano violin from the dealers Hill's in 1891 and sold it back to them in 1912.
