Description

  • huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera)
of cylindrical form rising from a flat base fitted with a central plug, the thick wood walls of a rich patina and attractively figured with irregular dark brown streaks

Condition

As expected of a brushpot of this large size and age, there are vertical age cracks, a couple of which have been stabilised. There is also shrinkage to the interior where the plug fits. There are minor bruises and cracks to the exterior and rim.

Large brushpots are also used for storing painting scrolls. This piece with natural, fluid grain pattern is lively and attractive, and its shape, gently tapering inward from the top to the base is both elegant and pleasing.
