Catalogue Note
The present figure of the young King of the Gods holding the thunderbolts in his upraised right hand relates directly to Piamontini’s small bronzes. The sculptor had a penchant for depicting small children or bacchantini, all of which are distinguished by their reddish brown patina and finely chiseled and varied surface textures. The body, facial type and idiosyncratic treatment of the hair seen here compare with those details in another bronze by Piamontini of two putti playing in the Corsini Gallery, Rome, another example of which sold at Sotheby’s, Paris 30 September 2011, lot 41.
