Catalogue Note

This canvas, along with a pendant (see Provenance) have been previously endorsed by Fred Meijer as autograph works by David de Coninck. The composition must have found favor with de Coninck's clientele, as he himself not only executed it on more than one occasion, but also due to the fact that a number of anonymous copies and variants survive (see, for example, Vienna, Dorotheum, 16 June 2011, lot 298).

When last sold, the provenance listed indicated that this work could have possibly been sold in a 1927 Hugo Helbing auction, and subsequently with P. de Boer, Amsterdam (in both instances as by Jan Fyt). That provenance refers to a variant of this picture, and is not related to the present canvas.
