Claw-set with an oval ruby weighing 5.66 carats, to a raised mount set with baguette diamonds, size 52.

Condition

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 88166, stating that the cushion-shaped ruby measuring 10.64 x 8.29 x 7.11mm and weighing 5.66 carats, is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating. Also accompanied by the original receipt from the Army and Navy Stores, Westmintser, London, dated 3rd May 1940. Ruby pinkish red of medium strong saturation, with very good transparency, some typical inclusions visible under close inspection and minor abrasions; for further details on the stone, please refer to the SSEF report. Baguette diamonds bright and lively. Signs of normal wear to the metal consistent with age and use. In very good condition. Gross weight approximately 6 grams.

The ruby was purchased by the grandfather of the present owners, the honourable Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Lyndhurst Towne, before he left for war as a collateral for his wife and children to emigrate to America should England be invaded by Germany.
