Catalogue Note

Melita Denaro's work is a deeply personal response to the landscape of the Isle of Doagh, a peninsula located on the north coast of Ireland. She goes there each year to paint, embracing the elements of this dramatic coastline. Breathing in the skies, the sea, the fields, the light, she translates these experiences onto canvas with a profound sense of feeling and energy. Bound up within the landscape, other emotions and thoughts find their way in; the deep crimson that fills the sky in the present work is not just evocative of the turbulent forces of nature, but also of a personal moment in Denaro's life - something, she reveals with a hint of mischief, to do with a relationship, but she doesn't divulge further.

On this scale, this painting is one of Denaro's largest, and required intense effort over a two year period. The strength of that effort reveberates through the canvas.
