Catalogue Note

The present work was originally in the collection of renowned German art dealer Justin K. Thannhauser, a leading figure in the distribution of Modern art in the 20th Century. In 1913, he held at his gallery the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Picasso’s works that had yet been seen. The show was a huge success and formed the beginning of a close personal and professional relationship between dealer and artist. Over the years Thannhauser acquired many more works by Picasso, including Woman Ironing (1904), now in the collection of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum.
