Condition

The canvas is not lined and appears to have been re-stretched on an original stretcher. The edges are taped. Examination under UV light reveals a few small spots of retouching to pinholes in the upper left corner, and at the centre of the upper and right edges. There are some further small spots of inpainting to the left of the signature and some strokes of retouching to three fine lines, possibly flattened creases: in the tree towards the centre left edge, in the lower right corner and in the foreground at centre left. There are a few tiny spots of paint loss to the top of the trees surrounding the house at centre. There is a fine line of craquelure at lower centre. The pigments are fresh and bright. This work is in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

‘When my friends and I wanted to further the work of the Impressionists and develop it, we sought to go beyond their naturalist impressions of colours. Art is not nature. We were stricter in terms of compositions. Colour was a means of expression of which we had to take advantage’

Pierre Bonnard speaking to Ingrid Rydbeck
