Catalogue Note

The present work is a sketch for the portrait of Jacques Nayral of 1911 in the Tate Modern, London. A pseudonym for Joseph Houot, Jacques Nayral was a modernist poet, dramatist and publisher, a close friend of Albert Gleizes with whom he shared an interest and deep understanding of the theories of simultaneity championed by Henri Bergson. Nayral married Gleizes' sister Mireille in 1912.
