Description

  • Venezia (Venice)
  • signed g. de Chirico (lower right)
  • oil on canvas
  • 40.5 by 50cm., 16 by 19 5/8 in.

Provenance

Antonio Amendola, Italy (possibly acquired directly from the artist)
Acquired from the above by the mother of the present owner in 1956

Condition

The canvas is not lined. There is a thick layer of milky varnish preventing UV light from fully penetrating; however, examination under UV reveals a spot of re-touching to the upper left corner, associated with pigment loss. There are some vertical striations within the pigment throughout the composition, which could be partially due to the type of medium used. There are two horizontal fine lines of stable craquelure towards the centre of the upper edge, and there is some frame rubbing to the edges. This work is in overall good condition.
