Il s'agit de l'une des cinq esquisses en cire réalisées pour une commande du 26 août 1862, pour la cour Napoléon, dans le cadre de grands travaux d'aménagement entrepris par Napoléon III pour réunir le Louvre aux Tuileries. Le projet est abandonné en 1870, et la cour voit s'ériger en 1988 la grande pyramide de Ieoh Ming Pei.

Condition

The wax sculpture in good condition overall with minor surface dirt and some wear to the paint of the wooden base. The wax appears dry at some places where very fine hairline fissures are visible. The horse's tail slightly loose, as well as Napoléon's sword. Remains of an old dark varnish at several places. A fine hairline fissure at the horse's proper left rear leg, proper righ front leg slightly loose, both legs may have been slightly restored. Fresh and lively modelling of the wax, precise in all details.
