Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. Good overall condition. There are the inevitable minor dents, marks and scratches due to age and use. There are the usual restorations to the mahogany. The gilding is slightly rubbed and tarnished and had been slightly cleaned. There are some stains to the marble top. This commode is ready to display. High quality of construction as expected for a Riesener piece.

Catalogue Note

Jean-Henri Riesener, cabinetmaker, received Master in 1767.

This commode is similar to the one that is now part of the Collection at the Carnavalet Museum (MB 296). With the latter bearing the double stamp of Jean-Henri Riesener and Adam Weisweiler, it highlights the co-operation between the two cabinetmakers, with Riesener not hesitating to outsource to his colleague. Mention should also be made of a commode, similar to our model and stamped by Riesener and Richter (sale Galerie Charpentier, Paris, May 30, 1951, lot V).
