Catalogue Note

Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Maurer experimented with a variety of drypoint etching techniques, before settling on a method whereby she folded the top right-hand edge of the metal plates diagonally, in the manner of someone bending the corner of a page to mark his or her place in a book and, taking a print of each stage, folded the plate completely. In the present lot Maurer seeks to articulate and record change in time through the process folding, which originated with Earmarks, the artist’s book of ten pages Maurer published in 1974. Another example from this series titled Seven Foldings and dated 1975 can be found in the Tate collection (purchased 1985, P77124).
