Catalogue Note

Jana Želibská studied at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Bratislava. In 1968 she received a scholarship for a residency in Paris, where she witnessed the protests of May 1968, a cultural, social and moral turning point in the history of France. It was at this time that Želibská started investigating questions around sexuality and gender identity, the historical representation of the female nude, and the connections between the feminine and the natural environment. Želibská was the only one of her generation of Czechoslovakian artists who openly dealt with intimate relationships between men and women and celebrated the female body from a (proto-)feminist perspective.

In 2012, a major retrospective of Želibská's work was held at the Slovak National Gallery, Bratislava. More recently Želibská's work was included in the Tate Modern exhibition The World Goes Pop.
