Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The canvas is mounted to matte board. The collage elements are well intact. The edges of the canvas are irregularly cut and the edges of the collage elements are irregularly torn, due to the artist's working method. Light wear is evident at the edges and corners of the canvas with very faint hairline cracking in the pigment at the lower right corner of the canvas. There is some minor foxing to the printed sheet music and evidence of a few creases to the collaged sheets. There is a soft undulation to the canvas. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

“The fragments of the drawing around the music suggest broken-off melodies and lost wholeness, somewhat in the way that Beethoven exploits a similar interruption of melodic expectation in the Opus 59 Rasumovsky quartets. This expressionistic aspect of Motherwell’s collages is one of his greatest strengths.” - Jack Flam, ed. Robert Motherwell, New York, 1991, p. 18
