Catalogue Note

In 1979, following his victory against Leon Spinks and becoming the first fighter to win the heavyweight champion of the world belt three times, Muhammad Ali retired from boxing. Although this retirement was short lived it marked the end of Ali's career as the best boxer in the world and the beginning of his subsequent public battle with Parkinson's disease. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ali's triumph over Joe Frazer in one of the sport's most infamous bouts 'The Thrilla in Manila'. In their third fight Ali took the title and asserted himself as 'the greatest' adding 'I said that even before I knew I was'.
