Catalogue Note

Sir John Gladstone, 1st Baronet (1764-1851), a Scottish merchant, moved his family to Fasque House in 1829. The house was built in 1809 by Sir Alexander Ramsay-Irvine, 6th Baronet. After John Gladstone's death, the house passed to his son, Sir Thomas Gladstone, 2nd Baronet (1804-1889) who expanded the estate through the purchase of more land and the building of a church. Thomas's brother, William Ewart Gladstone, who served as Prime Minister four times, visited the house often.
