Condition

The painting sits on its original canvas. The matter is very thin, which is characteristic of the artist's style at this point in his career, with pencil traces visible in some areas. The canvas was originally bigger, and was cut by the painter who finally decided to make a tondo of the portrait. The frame was realized by the painter. Perfect condition.

Catalogue Note

This painting is an accomplished study by Boutet de Monvel for his wife's beautiful 1936 portrait (see previous lot). The composition is characteristic of the artist's profile portraits inspired by the Italian Renaissance. Bernard Boutet de Monvel was commissionned for many profile portraits, from the 20's and onwards.
