Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Minor cracks and chips to the patina. A few gaps in the decorative work of basketry as visible in the Catalog illustration . Erosion to the lower part tip attesting its use.

Catalogue Note

Les boucliers baluse, sculptés en bois léger et renforcés par des ligatures en rotin tressé, sont caractéristiques du sud de l’île de Nias. Dans cette société guerrière pratiquant la chasse aux têtes, chaque homme possédait un bouclier de ce type, dont la forme évoquerait une tête de crocodile vue de dessus. Un bouclier très comparable est conservé dans les collections du musée Barbier-Mueller (inv. n° 3292-2 ; Newton, Arts des Mers du Sud. Insulinde, Mélanésie, Polynésie, Micronésie, 1998, p. 23, n° 1).
