Condition

The canvas is not lined. There are artist's pinholes at the four all corners. The impasto is strong and well preserved. There is no evidence of retouching under UV light. This work is in very good original condition.

Printemps 1907 : Auguste Herbin est invité en Corse par le collectionneur et critique d’art allemand Wilhelm Uhde. Lors de ce séjour il peint 15 tableaux dont la présente vue de la citadelle de Corte en haute Corse. Les couleurs et le soleil de la Corse furent une révélation pour Herbin, lui qui était en pleine révolution Fauve. Après avoir exposé en mars 1907 au Salon des Indépendants, aux côtés de Derain, Vlaminck et Braque, l'artiste, revenu de son séjour corse, expose en octobre 1907 ses nouvelles créations au Vème Salon d'Automne au Grand Palais. On y découvre, témoins de l'importance que représente alors cette série aux yeux d'Herbin, certaines toiles réalisées en Méditerranée telles qu'Un coin de la Place du marché à Bastia sur laquelle Wilhelm Uhde a d’ailleurs jeté son dévolu. Lumineuses, les toiles corses d'Herbin renvoient aux compositions aujourd'hui légendaires de Derain, Matisse, et Braque lorsqu'ils peignaient à Collioure, Saint-Tropez, La Ciotat et l'Estaque. La vibrante palette ainsi que la vitalité frénétique de la composition de cette vue de Corte placent cette œuvre parmi les plus belles créations fauves de l'artiste.

 

In the Spring of 1907, Auguste Herbin was invited to Corsica by the German collector and art critic Wilhelm Uhde. He painted 15 paintings during his time there including the present view of the Corte citadelle in Corsica. The Corsican sun and colours were a revelation for Herbin who was, at the time, fully involved with the Fauvist revolution. After showing his works in March 1907 at the Salon des Indépendants alongside Derain, Vlaminck and Braque, the artist, back from his trip to Corsica, exhibited his new works in October 1907 at the 5th Salon d’Automne at the Grand Palais.   As testimony to the importance of this series in Herbin’s eyes, he presented certain canvases painted by the Mediterranean such as Au coin de la Place du marché à Bastia a work much admired by Wilhelm Uhde. These luminous Corsican paintings by Herbin are reminiscent of the now legendary compositions by Derain, Matisse and Braque that they painted at Collioure, Saint-Tropez, La Ciotat and l’Estaque. The vibrant palette as well as the composition’s frenetic vitality place this view of the Corte among the artist’s most beautiful Fauve creations.
