Description

  • An Egyptian Limestone Round-topped Stela

  • 11 13/16 by 8 13/16 in. 30 by 22 cm.
carved in sunk relief with King Apries offering the hieroglyphic symbol for land to the the king of the gods, Amun, and his consort the goddess Mut, the king wearing the royal kilt with bull’s tail and the crown of Upper Egypt, Amun his characteristic crown, and Mut the vulture headdress and the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, a winged sun-disk flanked by uraei above, the inscriptions including the names of Apries, Amun, and Mut, the three lines of inscription below apparently removed in antiquity.

acquired by the present owner in a country auction in the United Kingdom

Condition

As shown and described, surface somewhat worn, note chips and other imperfections visible in the photograph. The stela is fastened into an old wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Affixed to the back of the wood frame are a label printed “N. Tano/Antiquities/Cairo - Egypt” and inscribed “3-99”, and a tattered 1925 (Tano?) invoice with much-faded ink writing.
