Description

  • A Roman Marble Head of Sarapis
  • Total height 28 cm. 11 in.
based on the monumental cult statue in Alexandria created by Bryaxis in the late 4th Century B.C, the unarticulated tenon-like neck with deep rounded channel in front, his face with massive symmetrically-arranged unruly beard of voluted curls and deep-set eyes under faceted brows, his long wavy hair falling over the forehead in five equidistant curls (two surviving) and flowing down the sides, the top of the head carved flat for addition of the modius, the back roughly worked; no restorations.

the sculptor Victor Rousseau (1865-1954), Vorst, Belgium, acquired in Rome in the 1890s

As described and shown, two small fragments repaired at back of neck, "French nicotine patina" overall.
