Catalogue Note

Republicans Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Norton are shown here flanking George Washington. The two politicians campaigned for protective tariffs and defeated the incumbent Grover Cleveland in the presidential campaign of 1888. They lost the popular vote by 90,000 ballots but won the heavily populated industrial states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois to carry the Electoral College 233 to 168. Harrison was called the Centennial President because his inauguration the following year coincided with the anniversary of George Washington’s first inauguration in 1789.
