Catalogue Note

Beginning in 1882, W. H. Mullins developed one of the largest sheet metal companies in the United States, creating everything from weathervanes and statuary to entire building fronts, and later expanding into boats, launches, and automobile parts and bodies. Mullins developed an innovative method of die-stamping copper, which was much more efficient than the hand hammering practiced by early manufacturers, and he relished big, complex projects that employed the technology. The company created a thirty-two foot monument of the god Hermann for the city of New Ulm, Minnesota, at the time the largest statue ever made in America, and won the contract to manufacture Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original nineteen-foot weathervane of the huntress Diana to top Madison Square Garden.
