Condition

Overall in very good condition. The favrile glass shade with some small scattered air bubble and particulate inclusions throughout, and with one large open collapsed air bubble on the shade interior, all inherent in the making and not at all visually detracting. The lower shade rim with a few very small linear tool marks, also inherent in the making. The midsection of the shade with a small tight internal hairline (approximately ¾ inch in length) which extends through a particulate inclusion and appears inherent in the making. There are a few minute surface flecks to the top aperture rim which are exceedingly minor, and with some occasional light surface scratches to the shade exterior and interior. The shade exterior with a few tiny paint specks. The patinated bronze surfaces of the base display a particularly rich and satisfying russet brown patina, showing some occasional light surface scratches, surface wear, rubbing, surface soiling in the recessed areas, and isolated areas of surface residue. The patina with scattered traces of surface oxidation and areas of minor surface discolorations throughout, consistent with age and use. The arms surmounting the oil font are in strong stable condition, with some minor irregular bending and rubbing to the end terminals consistent with use. The top interior surface of the shade arm collar is impressed D1015. Please note the oil base is not electrified and retains its burner unit and burner knobs from the period by the Duplex Company. With a later clear glass chimney which is in very good condition. An early and rare oil lamp in remarkable original condition, displaying a particularly artistic shade with superb decoration and color, and an extraordinary base pairing.

Catalogue Note

Tiffany's earliest lamps were designed to offer illumination through the burning of oil or kerosene. Throughout later generations, the majority of these early fuel lamps have been converted to electricity. A rare exception, this lamp retains its original oil canister and burner mechanism and faithfully functions as an oil lamp.
