Literature

Stephen A. Martin, Archibald Knox, London, 2001, p. 193 (for the present example illustrated)

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The tankard has a great scale and strong presence when viewed in person. The silver surfaces present with a few minute occasional surface scratches, scattered minor abrasions and very light tarnish concentrated to the recessed portions of the design scattered throughout, consistent with age and gentle handling. The upper portion of the body with a ding to one side, measuring approximately 1 x ¾ inch. The handle with minor traces of abrasions along the edge likely from handling. Some of the enamel decorations with minute losses, only visible upon close inspection, the largest measuring 3/8 x 1/16 in. The color of the enamel presents with a more vivid and saturated turquoise when seen in person than it appears in the catalogue illustration. The turquoise stones also present with a more saturated turquoise color when seen in person than in the catalogue illustration. The sinuous trailing vines heighten the sense of visual movement across the tankard. A wonderful and rare piece with a very powerful silhouette distinguished by its impressive scale, highly artistic decoration and strong coloration.
