Condition

The panel appears to be sound. There is a faint craquelure pattern in areas across the surface, mainly located to the darker areas of pigment; otherwise the work appears in good overall condition. Under ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish. There appear to be old retouchings to areas of craquelure in the background and also some in the foreground. Further areas of darker pigment amongst the figures in the foreground but they are difficult to interpret conclusively as retouchings or the result of an uneven varnish. Held in a gilt plaster frame.
