Catalogue Note
Stedman took part in an expedition to Dutch Guiana, or Surinam, under Colonel Louis Henry Fourgeord, sent to protect the European planters from their slaves, who had been so badly treated that they had risen in rebellion. Soon after arriving in Surinam Stedman fell in love with a beautiful mulatto slave girl, Joanna, the natural daughter of a wealthy Dutch planter. Although there as a soldier, whose duty it was to subdue the negro rebels, Stedman was humane enough to be horrified by the brutalities suffered by the slaves and the ferocity with which they were punished for their insurrection. He was unable to do much to mitigate the horrors that he witnessed, but in his book he exposed to public view the abuses that had taken place.
