Catalogue Note

Mayer (1755-1803) was one of the most important late eighteenth-century European painters of the Ottoman Empire, and a close friend of Sir Robert Ainslie, 1st Baronet, British ambassador to Turkey at Constantinople between 1776 and 1792. The majority of his paintings and drawings during this period were commissioned by Ainslie, with whom he travelled extensively throughout the Ottoman Empire between 1776 and 1794. These three watercolours were later reproduced as aquatints.
