Catalogue Note
A closely comparable Frankenthal teapot painted in this manner with chinoiserie figures was sold at Sotheby's London, 28th June 1973, lot 188, and subsequently sold at Christie's London, 10th June 2010, lot 183.
Other Frankenthal pieces painted with chinoiserie figures of this type have appeared on the market throughout the 20th century, unlike the present example, most have a parasol motif border at the rim which would suggest they were all once part of the same service. Most recently a teabowl and saucer was sold in these rooms, 18th October 1988, previously sold 19th October 1976, lot 87. A saucer from the service is illustrated by F. Hoffmann, Frankenthaler Porzellan, 1911, vol. II, fig. 751.
