Catalogue Note

The younger Maharaja Fateh Singh on horseback is shown in a miniature attributed to Swarup Ram by Toby Falk and formerly in the Collection of Peter Cochrane, London (see Bonhams, London, 6 April 2006, lot 375), and another, signed Swarup Ram (see Nouveau Drouot, Paris, 7 October 1980, lot 55). For other works by or attributed to Swarup Ram, see Ehnbom 1985, pp.122-5, nos.55-56; Christie’s, New York, 25 May 1978, lot 58; Sotheby’s, London, 4 April 1978, lot 326; Christie’s, London, 19 April 1979, lot 105; For a portrait of the same subject as here see London 1976, no.102. Robert Skelton has identified a number of paintings previously attributed to different schools, mostly Ratlam, as in fact from Sitamau (see Ehnbom 1985, p.172). He also points out that Maharaja Fateh Singh of Sitamau (r.1752-1802) had a son Raja Raj Ram Singh (r.1802-67) named as Raja Raj Singh in inscriptions.
