Description

  • Cloisonne vase
supported on a tall splayed foot, the ovoid body rising to a flaring trumpet neck flanked by large gilt-bronze chilong-form handles, the body enameled in green, yellow, white, red, blue and pink with four shaped medallions enclosing leafy chrysanthemum blooms amidst rockwork, reserved against pairs of lotus blooms and bats centering on stylized shou characters, all between ruyi-head borders, the neck with scrolling lotus between bands of stiff leaves, repeated around the foot, all on a turquoise ground

Provenance

Acquired in Canada in the 1970s.

Condition

There are signs that at least one chilong handle may not be original to the piece, and one handle with a loss to its hind foot. The vase with screw holes to the neck to secure the handles. There is a dent to the side of the body with some enamel loss and a repair to the shoulder and a small area of the body. There are small scattered chips to the enamels, some with fill. The splayed foot with three screw holes, two of them missing screws, and a small area surrounding one hole with oxidation. The neck, foot and one handle are loose. The surface with characteristic pitting and general wear, and there is wear to the gilding. The later metal liner with signs of use.
