Catalogue Note

This box is accompanied by a letter from Louise, Princess of Bavaria, Princess d'Orléans, (1869-1952), saying that this box was a personal possession of Emperor Franz Joseph II of Austria.  It had been given to him by his fiancée - and Louise’s aunt - the young princess Elisabeth, during his 1853 visit to Munich and Possenhofen (Elisabeth’s family home).  Though the marriage was not a success, the Emperor adored “Sisi”; this snuffbox came to Louise’s collection from that of their daughter, Archduchess Marie-Valerie.
