Catalogue Note

Marilyn Barry’s 'Our Weekend in Liverpool' gives a vivid account of one of her "wildest adventures", which took place between 21 and 23 February 1964. She and her three friends Maxine, Janice and Jenny set off from Victoria coach station "carrying three cakes, a tape recorder, radio, three cameras, scrap books and two bags each" to visit the four Beatles’ family homes. She recalls how when visiting George Harrison’s home two "Oxfam" girls arrived who were collecting personal items for a Beatles’ raffle: "Mrs Harrison brought down one of George’s old shirts, which we all kissed. It was pink with black stains under the arms. She told us that George wore a black polo-neck jumper underneath it in the Cavern. When he played at the Cavern, he used to sweat so much that his clothes were dripping when he came home".

Marilyn and her three friends all bought tickets for the raffle, her ticket, included in this lot, proved to be a lucky one: "I don’t normally win anything in raffles, but I won George’s shirt and John’s hair ... [also donated to the raffle]. I kept the shirt but gave the hair to Janice who loved John the most..."
