Catalogue Note

The view of Dunkery Beacon from Selworthy was a theme Munnings returned to a number of times, varying the perspective by painting closer to the tree-line (the closest view can be seen in a painting sold at Sotheby's, London, May 10, 1978, lot 131). These views were likely painted during the war when he lived in Exmoor.

Dunkery Beacon is the top of Dunkery Hill, the highest point in Exmoor and Somerset, over 1700 feet. It was included in the Royal Forest Of Exmoor during the time of Henry II.
