Description

  • Doris Ulmann
  • 'Roll, Jordan, Roll'
  • Photogravures, brown board slipcase, linen spine
(New York: Robert O. Ballou, 1933, the deluxe edition of 350 signed and numbered copies), a volume containing 90 full-page hand-pulled photogravures after photographs by Doris Ulmann, with text by Julia Peterkin. Large 4to, stamped brown boards with linen spine and tips, top edges gilt, numbered '249' in pencil on the half title, numbered '249' and signed by both Ulmann and Peterkin in ink on the colophon, in the matching brown board slipcase; together with an additional photogravure, signed in pencil in the margin (Book of 101 Books, pp. 78-9) (2)

Condition

The photogravures are in generally excellent condition, with most of the original tissue interleaving intact. This volume is in generally very good condition, with a tight binding. Foxing is pervasive along the deckle edges (lower and right). This affects the margins and some of the text pages, but generally does not affect the plates or the images. The boards are rubbed. The linen spine and tips are somewhat soiled and age-darkened. The brown board slipcase is cracked along the joints, most seriously along the upper joints. Soiling, wear, and some small gouges are visible. On the accompanying photogravure is a tiny scratch, with resultant loss of emulsion, in the central portion of the image. Foxing, dampstaining, and age-darkening are visible in the margins and on the reverse of the print. These issues do not appear to affect the image.
